Aug 12 - Strike Out Hunger Bowlathon

On Friday August 12, 2012 Meals on Wheels of Hamilton County will host its 12th annual “Strike Out Hunger” Bowlathon. It will be held at Coopers Stardust Bowl in Noblesville. All proceeds will help provides meals to seniors who are unable to prepare meals for themselves, and seniors who have no money to pay for meals. Without Meals on Wheels they would be at risk nutritionally and many would go to bed hungry.

Mayors for Meals Day
On March 21 six Hamilton County municipal leaders found a new way to serve their consitituents. Mayors John Ditslear of Noblesville, Mayor Andy Cook of Westfield, Town Manager Scott Fadness and city and town council presidents Rick Sharp, William Cook and Glen Bougher help deliver meals to clients in Noblesville, Westfield, Fishers, Carmel, Arcadia and Sheridan.

March For Meals is an annual national campaign to raise awareness of senior hunger and to encourage action on a local level. Senior Nutrition Programs across the United States promote March For Meals in their local communities through public events, partnerships with local businesses, volunteer recruitment and fundraising initiatives. The campaign takes place in the month of March because it was during this month that the law was enacted that included Senior Nutrition Programs in the Older Americans Act.

Mayors For Meals is a component of March For Meals that utilizes the involvement of local mayors. Mayors and other local officials deliver meals on one day in March to show their support of their local senior nutrition program.

An integral part of this initiative includes the Pledge to end senior hunger in America by 2020. Local Senior Nutrition Programs encourage as many people as possible during their March For Meals events to sign the Pledge and take action against senior hunger.

MOW Bowl-a-thon, August 12, 2011

On Friday August 12, 2011 friends of Meals on Wheels gathered at Cooper’s Stardust Bowl to help raise month for the Sponsor-A-Senior program that provides meals to seniors who are unable to prepare meals for themselves, and seniors who have no money to pay for meals. Without Meals on Wheels they would be at risk nutritionally and many would go to bed hungry. Twenty-eight teams of bowlers turned out to Strike Out Hunger in Hamilton County. More than $6,000 was raised in this two-hour event, and everyone had a great time. There was free pizza, and lots of door prizes to be won. The highest scoring first place team was Sheridan Healthcare Center with a total pin count of 2,617 pins and they were the trophy winners. They won 8 tickets for their team of 4 to two Colts pre-season games. The second place team was Harbour Manor Health & Living Center. They won a golf foursome at Harbour Trees Golf Club.

SAVE THE DATE for next year, on August 10, 2012, we will continue this fundraising tradition and “Strike Out Hunger” in our Hamilton County community. Everyone is welcome to participate. Meals on Wheels of Hamilton County is celebrating 35 years of home-delivered meal service to the senior citizens in our community this month.

“Our neighbors, our mothers, and our fathers may be hungry, and not know where to get their next meal. We need your help to end senior hunger in Hamilton County. Together, we can make a difference,” Meals on Wheels of Hamilton County Executive Director Marti Lindell said.

To celebrate their three and a half decades of service, the organization will host a Hoosier Derby Party from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, April 30 at The Sagamore Golf Club in Noblesville.

A donation of $35 per person entitles each guest to complimentary mint juleps, hors d’ouerves, music entertainment, a “Most Beautiful Hat” contest, virtual horse racing and other fun activities. “Sponsors will be recognized and featured on our sponsor’s banner at the event,” said Lindell. “Come and network with other business professionals.”

The most valuable gift offered by the Meals on Wheels program is the hope of seniors to remain living independently in their own homes for as long as possible.

“Our Sponsor-A-Senior program feeds those who cannot afford the cost of meals. A gift of just $35 will feed a hungry senior one meal a day for 10 days,” said Lindell. “If you cannot attend the party, be a sponsor, or pledge your support to end senior hunger.”

Meals will not be delivered on the following holidays: Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Years Day, Memorial Day, July 4th.
